Text Box: The Highbridge Homecoming Festival took place in August with a full schedule of events  in the Pavilion and on the park grounds.  Friday activities included: an Antique Farm Machinery Display, Dessert Auction,  Karaoke Contest and Silent Auction.  

On Saturday the KY River Otter Outpost gave river tours in canoes.  Under tents  art and games were provided for children.  Later several groups played music, the Ken Doolin Cloggers took the stage in the evening followed by "Pickin' Time" . (below)  The evening ended with the Festival Dance.

Highest railroad bridge in the US over a navigable stream (308 feet).  Planned as a suspension bridge for the Lexington and Danville RR by John Roebling, designer f the famous Brooklyn Bridge (NY City).  Hugh stone towers to hold the cables were built in 1851.  Work on the bridge was abandoned during the Civil War.  The towers were removed in 1929 by the Southern Railroad to permit double tracks.   
  
First cantilever bridge built on the American continent.  Most remarkable bridge in the US when constructed in 1876.  Marked the beginning of the modern scientific bridge building.  It was designed by Charles Shaler Smith and built for the Cincinnati Southern Railroad.  The Bridge was replaced in 1911 using the same foundations, without stopping rail service.

High Bridge was the last link in the 338 mile railroad between Cincinnati and Chattanooga, TN.  The bridge spanned a 1,300 foot gap between the hills that flanked the river, 280 feet below.  The bridge was first used in 1877.  For many years High Bridge was the world's highest bridge.  A the peak of the passenger service in the 1920's as many as 12 passenger trains went over the bridge daily.  High Bridge Park was reconstructed and re-dedicated in 1999.
