JOB DESCRIPTION
General Purpose: This position involves performing traditional and non-traditional law enforcement functions in a community involved and problem solving policing environment.

Classification: Full time, 40 hour work week.

Supervision: Work is normally performed under the direct supervision, but the employee must be able to work under minimal supervision. An employee in this class may be called upon to be an acting supervisor in the absence of the regular supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
. Ability to understand and execute complex written and oral instructions.
. Ability to get along with others and work effectively with the public and fellow workers.
. Ability to gain a thorough understanding and grasp of the application of constitutional law, statutory law, City ordinances, technical police practices and procedures and department policies, procedures, orders, and regulations.
. Ability to learn and retain a thorough knowledge of the City including not only its physical characteristics, but also its normal routine of events and the usual behavior patterns of its residents.
. Ability to exhibit courage, initiative, problem solving capacity, sound judgment and good human relations skills in coping with the numerous situations which may be encountered.
. Ability to have, or develop by the end of the police academy, the physical strength, conditioning, skill and knowledge to proficiently utilize physical combat skills, chemical munitions or firearms, as appropriate, in order to make a forcible physical arrest.
. Ability to demonstrate firmness, mature judgment and a fair, unbiased, professional manner in your conduct when dealing with members of the public, offenders and other members of the criminal justice system.
. Willingness to participate in the accomplishment of the departmental goals and measurable objectives.
. Ability and willingness to participate in community affairs, civic groups and service organizations as a representative of the police department.
. Ability to learn to competently conduct investigations.
. Ability to learn to prepare written reports, records and correspondence in accordance with generally accepted police practices and departmental policy and procedures.
. Ability to testify professionally and credibly in court proceedings.
. Ability to learn to control traffic and investigate accidents.
. Ability to learn to utilize forensic techniques including the use of hazardous chemicals.
. Ability to patrol on foot or bicycle and operate various sizes of vehicles, safely and efficiently under routine and emergency response conditions and for extended periods of time.
. Ability to learn to operate complex technical equipment such as various types of communications equipment, fax machines, computers, radar and other technology related to law enforcement.
. Ability to lift and remove an injured person weighing a minimum of 150 pounds from a burning vehicle or other hazardous location and to provide first aid to the injured.
. Physical condition and ability to successfully pursue and capture fleeing offenders on foot.
. Ability to learn to competently perform any other related duties and responsibilities, which may be subsequently assigned to this position.
. Responsibility to maintain high honesty, integrity and moral standards.
. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Chief or his designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- be a U.S. citizen
- possess a high school diploma or GED
- Ability to obtain and maintain a licensed driver status in the State of Kentucky
- Possession of good eyesight, including depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors.
- Ability to fluently speak, hear, read and write the English language.
- Applicants must also complete all requirements established by the City of Wilmore for employment as a police officer. This may include, but is not limited to, a written examination, an oral board, a psychological exam, a polygraph examination, a physical agility test, a comprehensive background investigation and a job-related medical examination including a drug screening test.

The minimum requirements may be waived by the City Mayor.

HOW TO APPLY

APPLICATION PROCESS
1. To receive consideration for employment, a fully completed City of Wilmore employment application shall be submitted to the Chief of Police. Resumes shall not be accepted in lieu of a fully completed application.
2. All sections and questions on the application must be answered. When a section or question does not apply, insert "NA" (not applicable). INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS SHALL NOT RECEIVE CONSIDERATION.
3. Employment applications shall only be accepted for existing job vacancies.
4. One application is required for each position. Police Department vacancies require a Police Department application whether applying for a sworn or civilian position. Please check the job description for the correct application.
5. Employment applications shall remain active for a period of 180-days, however, applications received after posted deadline date shall not receive consideration unless deadline is extended or position is re-opened within 180-days.
6. Applicants considered for employment shall be subject to a comprehensive background check which may include but is not limited to a polygraph examination, verification of employment, credit check, criminal background check, driving history check, a post offer medical examination including a drug screening and a psychological evaluation to determine suitability and compatibility with job description.
