History

The City of Wilmore purchased the former school building at 210 S. Lexington Ave. on June 15, 2020. The purchase price was $250,000, which was an extremely good deal for the building and 9 acres of land. The City was able to secure the building for government use after Jessamine County Schools decided to discontinue the use of the building as a school.

The building was first used as Wilmore High School, followed by Wilmore Elementary School, and then Jessamine Early Learning Village and ended its school function as The Providence School.

Wilmore government is excited about all the additional space and amenities the building will provide. The gymnasium and the stage will be used for athletics and performances. The former cafeteria will be available for meeting space for large groups. Several classrooms will also be available for smaller meetings and recreational classes. A proposed History Room will house memorabilia and historical artifacts from Wilmore that the public can view.

City Hall personnel and administrators will have offices across the front of the building in the former office space used by school personnel. The City Council Chambers will be housed in the former library space in the building, and will provide a much bigger room with more seating available. Wilmore Police Department will occupy the stone portion of the building and have offices and training space. Wilmore Fire Department will have office space and training rooms in the other wing of the building. Wilmore Parks & Recreation will utilize the gym and several other spaces for programming and for rentals.

Vince Lewellen has been named as the Director of Facilities & Cemetery and will oversee all aspects of the “new” building.

The City sold the former City Hall building in downtown Wilmore on E. Main Street with the stipulation that the new use will continue economic development for the downtown area.
